July 2005,
John Rinck and
Ruth Mark e-mailed and talked of some of the ways the homeless needed to be helped
to get on their feet.
They needed a job,
but had no address, no money for a telephone or a voice mail, they had to carry
their back pack everywhere they went to apply for a job, and didn’t have a place
to wash their clothes, or put on
appropriate
clothes.
We researched all the available
services in the community.
August 2005, John introduced Ruth to several men from Room In The Inn,
and with this small group, we put together
a Board with an organizational structure, and plans for a day program to assist the homeless find work.
September – October 2005, Ruth made a presentation to Christ Church Cathedral
Vestry who extended the invitation to use
an “old” large youth room in the basement of the church with access to Upper
Street on the back side of the church building.
November 2005, Volunteers from three churches and two homeless men
painted the room and the concrete rough ceiling
with a brush and then with a paint sprayer. Volunteers, and businesses
donated furnishings, drapes were made, carpets were taken from an adjoining apartment building that was to be refurbished.
It was decided that we would not have a religious or church designation, but that we should
live the example of the churches we represented
in compassion, concern and faithfulness to
our Lord, and to our clients.
December 2005, we accepted our first five men from Room In The Inn
as our clients.
January 2006, we applied for our Kentucky State Incorporation Papers.
June 2006, our Board was expanded to meet our By-laws of 8-10 members. (see our Board
listing)
Application forms were drawn up for future board
members.
Several churches donated
funds to assist us with the day to day operations of buying coffee, snacks, office supplies etc.
September 2006, there was a need
to apply for a government 501 (c) 3 of our own for donors who wanted to contribute to this ministry. Jesse Mark and
Michael Noyes helped us in that endeavor.
Our 501 (c) 3 was granted
June 07.
February 2007, Church of the Good Shepherd donated funds from their
“Gala” of $9800 for operations.. Bob Gibson from Good Shepherd Episcopal Church
helped us keep our old computers operating.
August 2007, we started our quarterly Newsletter
September 2007, we received a United Thank Offering Grant of $9360 from the National Episcopal Church for new computers and computer instruction for
our homeless clients. Lexington Public Library
donated four computers and a large computer table which houses six computers.
Second Presbyterian Church and St. Martha’s Episcopal
Church donated funds for bus passes for the year as well as several valuable volunteers.
Bob Gibson teaches new clients the basics of the computer.
